Its concentration in plasma is raised in renal disease and in those with vascular disease and so may contribute to their respective pathogenesis. This in turn reduces the synthesis of thymidine and adenine nucleotides. This results in the depletion of adenosine triphosphate in vascular tissue and of thymidine triphosphate in peripheral lymphocytes. It has also been shown that elevated homocysteine is associated with increased levels of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase in vascular tissue.
